Exhibition Statement:

“Buffalo Awakening” is a collaborative show between Blackfeet artist John Isaiah Pepion and photojournalist Louise Johns. “Buffalo Awakening” exhibits the importance of the American bison culturally and ecologically. The animal, affectionately known by Indigenous People as “buffalo,” is making a comeback after near extermination in the 1800’s. Now the reintroduction to their traditional homelands is being led by Indigenous People. Buffalo have been the staff of life for Indigenous People since time immemorial. The way of life for Indigenous People along with buffalo continues to manifest in hunting for sustenance, spiritual power, names, song, dance, ceremonies, art and restoring colonized landscapes to native species. As the buffalo return to landscapes across the North American continent, they invite us to confront history and re-imagine a new relationship with place and with each other.
