Capturing the light is everything! It is what defines a sense of place. Illuminating the geography, revealing the atmosphere of the moment. Giving depth and dimension to the features of the landscape as colors comes to life, while invigorating the reflective surface of water. Light exposes familiar clues to the atmosphere such as the temperature, humidity, season and location. It is the atmosphere that brings landscapes to life. Each one is completely different than the other. Here in Montana, I find the atmosphere mysterious in its complexity and diversity.
When painting/drawing I intuitively use complex layers of color, to develop the atmosphere. My intention is to express the beauty of that location. It is my belief that the atmosphere is what brings a landscape to life.
